iOS 27 Hides Video Previews From Unknown Senders
If you sent a video by MMS this fall and heard that iPhone recipients saw a filename instead of a preview, you were not imagining it. Since iOS 27 shipped in September 2026, Messages shows video and GIF attachments from a number the recipient has not saved or replied to as a file icon. Still images render as before. The video is delivered intact and plays when tapped, and the moment the recipient replies or saves the number, every video already in the thread switches to a normal preview.
It is the phone, not your file
We ran a controlled test rather than guess. Eleven MMS messages went to one iPhone on iOS 27 on Verizon, one variable changed per message:
| What we changed | Result |
|---|---|
| Our standard HEVC video, byte-identical to a customer send | file icon |
| Same video with a stray metadata track removed | file icon |
| H.264 instead of HEVC | file icon |
| 3GP container instead of MP4 | file icon |
| An 8-second clip under 200 KB | file icon |
| A still JPEG | rendered normally |
| An animated GIF | file icon |
| Video with no text in the message | file icon |
Then the sender-side variables, with the identical video file:
| Sender | Result |
|---|---|
| A number saved in the recipient's contacts before the send | preview rendered |
| An unknown number | file icon |
| The same unknown number, after the recipient replied "ok" | the earlier file icon changed to a preview on the spot, and new sends previewed |
| Saving the first number to contacts | all eight earlier file icons, including the GIF, became previews |
Codec, container, size, metadata, and caption changed nothing. Whether the recipient knows the sender changed everything. The carrier also rewrites the filename on the way through, so the name on the icon is not something a sender can set. Apple has not documented the change; this matches what other texting vendors observed when iOS 27 rolled out. The Screen Unknown Senders setting was off on the test phone, so this is not that filter.
What to do
- Open cold conversations with text or a still image. Ask a question that invites a reply. Once someone has replied, video previews render for them.
- Send video to repliers. A Recent Repliers dynamic list keeps that audience current automatically, so a video follow-up goes only to people who will see it.
- Lead with the thumbnail. If video matters on a first contact, send its key frame as an image alongside the video, or send the image and a link.
- Get saved early. A contact card (vCard) in an early message gives supporters a one-tap way to save your number.
Android phones are not affected. Nothing you do in the composer changes this, and no vendor's "fix" at the encoding or routing layer can, because the rule is applied by Messages at display time.
